GILBERTO VERGNE SABOIA

 

 

 

Ambassador of Brazil to Hungary

   

            - Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1942, graduated in Law at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1966. Joined   the Foreign Service in 1966, after having concluded the course in the Diplomatic Academy (Rio Branco Institute) the previous year.

             - Assignments abroad: Second Secretary at the Embassies in Washington (1967-1971) and Guatemala (1971-1975), Counselor at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1979-1984) and Minister, Deputy Head of Mission at the Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States, Washington (1986-1990).

             - Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Geneva (1993-1998); Ambassador to Sweden and concurrent Ambassador to Latvia (1998-2000); Ambassador to the The Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the OPCW since 2003.

             - Main positions held in Brazil: Advisor to the Secretary General of the Ministry (1984-1985); Head of the United Nations Division (1985- 1986); Chief of Cabinet of the Secretary General of the Ministry (1989-1993); Secretary of State for Human Rights, Ministry of Justice (2000-2001); Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs of the Foreign Ministry (2001-2003).

             -  Other positions held: Member of the Sub-Comission for the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities (1990-1993); Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the World Conference on Human Rights (Vienna, 1993); Chairman of the 52th session of the Commission on Human Rights (1996); Head of the Brazilian Delegation to the Rome Conference on the Establishment of the International Criminal Court (1998); Deputy Head of the Brazilian Delegation to the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination and Related Intolerance (Durban, South Africa, 2001). Elected  member of the International Law Commission by the General Assembly in 2006, for a mandate of five years.

            - On April 28 presented to His Excellency Mr. Lászlo Sólyom, President of the Republic of Hungary,  the Letters accrediting him as Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil.
